Google marked its 22nd year of existence on Sunday 29th September 2020 with an animated birthday Doodle. The celebration was of course in adherence to the social distancing guidelines.

The birthday Doodle shows Google’s G celebrating with its ‘oogle’ mates. It also features cake and presents in an online video conference party. The online party serves as a reminder that even in times of celebration, for the period of this pandemic, virtual is better.

22 years ago, two Stanford Ph.D. students and Google co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page published a paper called The Anatomy of a Large-Scale Hypertextual Web Search Engine. In the paper, they outlined Google, a prototype large-scale search engine with a database of at least 24 million pages.

Now, Google indexes hundreds of billions of webpages, and from its humble beginnings as a search engine, it is now the most dominant force in advertising. It now has a parent company, Alphabet, with subsidiaries touching everything from self-driving cars to its Android mobile software to the extension of life.

The birthdate itself is not definitive. Google had marked its birthday celebration on 27th September since 2006. However, it celebrated its birthday a day before on 26th September 2020 the previous year. In 2004 and 2003, the company celebrated on 7th September 2020 and 8th September 2020, respectively. Google itself was incorporated on 4th September 1998. Maybe one day, they’ll celebrate on the date of their incorporation.
