Facebook has now launched its cross-platform messaging feature, allowing select users on Messenger and Instagram to message one another app to app. In addition to this, Instagram is also getting a major overhaul of its DM system.

The overhaul of the Instagram DM system will feature expanded features taken from Messenger. Instagram messaging will get vanishing messages, selfie stickers, custom emoji, chat colors, and new ways to block unwanted messages. Messenger’s Watch Together feature, will also allow users to watch videos with friends during a video call.

Facebook is not forcing users to accept the updates as they can opt-out it if they want, however, it is hard to imagine why. Users on Instagram and Messenger can also search for profiles across both apps simultaneously.

The feature is not yet available to all users. According to CNN, it is currently being tested in select markets and will expand globally in the coming months.

Facebook has not revealed when it will begin integrating the feature for its other messaging platform, WhatsApp. Also, it is still unknown when the cross-platform messaging will be available to all its users.

The announcement follows the plan outlined by Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg in 2019. The plan focuses on transitioning his social media empire from public spaces to one with a greater focus on private communication. According to Zuckerberg, “private messaging, ephemeral stories, and small groups are by far the fastest-growing areas of online communication.”

Cross-platform messaging will help Facebook continue to dominate as much of the messaging market as possible. Already, it has more than a billion users on each of its platforms.
