Microsoft will now allow its employees to work from home permanently. The software maker announced what it calls the ‘hybrid workplace’ guidance internally to allow for greater flexibility once US offices reopen.

Most of Microsoft’s employees are still working from home as the world deals with the COVID-19 pandemic. The hybrid workplace guidance outlines the company’s flexible working plans for the future.

The software giant’s plan is to allow its employees to work from home freely for less than 50 percent of their working week, or for managers to approve permanent remote work.

This is because, for some roles, working remote will be difficult, or even impossible, at the same time many other employees will be able to take the less than 50 percent working from home option.

Microsoft also says there are a few roles that still require access to its offices. These roles include those that require access to hardware labs, data centers, and in-person training. The company will allow its employees to relocate domestically with approval. They are also allowed to even seek to move internationally if they can work remotely for their role.

However, there is one clause; compensation and benefits will now vary according to Microsoft’s own geopay scale. Microsoft will still cover home office expenses for permanent remote workers, however, it won’t be covering employee’s relocation costs from the office.

Employees can also get flexible working hours without needing their manager’s approval. Additionally, they can request part-time work hours through their managers.

Microsoft had initially started allowing its employees to work from home in March 2020 and has recently said its offices won’t reopen till January 2021.
