All over the world, security seems to be one of the biggest issues. With the internet celebrating thirty years of the World Wide Web on March 12, 2019, people have taken to the streets in Russia to protest a new law.

The Russian government has enacted a bill that will reduce its reliance on foreign internet servers, but thousands of people are protesting its plans to introduce tighter restrictions on the internet.

The Russian parliament passing the bill has evoked demonstrations and mass rallies in Moscow and two other cities. The bill is expected to isolate Russia’s internet service from the rest of the world to improve cyber-security.

In recent times, Russia has introduced a couple of tough internet laws to increase online security. The parliament passed two bills banning what they term as “disrespect” of authorities and the spread of fake news.

Russia’s main security agency, the FSB, said at the time that Telegram was the messenger of choice for “international terrorist organisations in Russia”.

But the populace thinks it will suppress what can be accessed via the internet and give the government absolute control. They also believe it will distort freedom of expression.

The campaigners gave speeches on large stages to this effect, and some were detained by the police.
