Amazon has announced that it will be hiring 100,000 seasonal workers to deal with increased demand over the holiday season. This is a decline from the 200,000 temporary workers the companies hired in 2019, but there’s an explanation.

The company has already increased its employees this year due to increased demand resulting from COVID-19. Amazon employed thousands in March and April as the shelter in place orders kicked in.

The employees are to pick, pack, and ship customer orders across Amazon’s network of warehouses in the US and Canada. The bulk of the employees will work in California, Texas, Maryland, Georgia, and New Jersey.

Amazon says it would make a permanent offer to 70% of the 175,000 workers it hired at the height of the pandemic in May 2020. The remaining 50,000 workers will retain their seasonal contracts that are expected to last up to 11 months. As of 30th June 2020, Amazon employed 876,800 people, excluding contractors and temporary workers.

The company says it has promoted 35,000 operations workers in 2020. It also says more than 30,000 employees have taken advantage of the Career Choice program that offers employees the chance to learn new skills in high-demand areas such as computer support specialist and paralegal.

Amazon’s minimum wage is $15 per hour. Its full-time employees also get to receive benefits like health insurance from the first day. If you’re in the right location and interested, you can apply here.
