Instagram is sending out emails to users alerting them of its new terms of use that will be effective 20th December 2020. In this article, we will point out the most important things to note about Instagram’s new policy.

You may not have read the Instagram terms of use before but it is important now, more than ever. The company explains that it does not charge you to use its service because it earns money from advertisers.

By using Instagram, you automatically allows it to use your personal data, such as; information about your activity and interests, to show you ads that are more relevant to you. However, it says that it does not sell this personal data to advertisers.

But, Instagram adds: “we provide general demographic and interest information to advertisers to help them better understand their audience.” While this cannot be used to identify individuals, it provides deeper understanding of people in groups.

Importantly, convicted s*x offenders are banned from using Instagram. This means that if you know such a person illegally using the service, you should report them. Additionally, the platform frowns at impersonation and automated use (such as bots).

For creators, Instagram notifies; “When you share, post, or upload content that is covered by intellectual property rights (like photos or videos) on or in connection with our Service, you hereby grant to us a non-exclusive, royalty-free, transferable, sub-licensable, worldwide license to host, use, distribute, modify, run, copy, publicly perform or display, translate, and create derivative works of your content (consistent with your privacy and application settings). This license will end when your content is deleted from our systems.”

Also, the platform can delete contents that violates its terms of use or if the law in a region requires it to do so. So, don’t be surprised if Instagram deletes a content that you deem is acceptable; authorities may have mandated it to do so.
