Microsoft and Apple are working on an Xbox Series X update that enables iPhones and iPads connect to the next-gen gaming console controller. This is reminiscent of the Xbox Elite 2 controller support on iOS 14.
On the initial release of the Xbox Series X on 10th November 2020, iOS and iPadOS devices could not be used in playing the game. But a ‘future’ update could change this gaming status. Yet, both companies have not given a timeframe for when to expect this.
It is important to know when the update is due because the above mentioned support for Xbox Elite 2 controller came almost a year later. In a blog post, Apple only stated; “Microsoft and Apple are working together to bring compatibility for the Xbox Series X controller to customers in a future update.”

It notably did not make any comment on the DualSense controller that launched with Sony’s PS5. Likely, this might be coming later, if it comes at all. This is because, DualSense is a first of its kind and it is more different from older PlayStation controllers.
For now, Apple says you can connect your latest iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple TV, and Mac to the following wireless controllers:
- Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth (Model 1708)
- Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2
- Xbox Adaptive Controller
- PlayStation DualShock 4 Wireless Controller
- Other MFi (Made for iOS) Bluetooth controllers
Connecting wireless controllers to these Apple devices allows you play supported games from Apple Arcade or the App Store, navigate your Apple TV, and more.
