China To Launch Mission To The Moon To Collect Rocks

The People’s Republic of China hasten up plans to launch an uncrewed spacecraft to the moon as soon as Tuesday, 24th November 2020. It’s been over four decades since lunar samples have been brought to Earth. China aims to solve such deficit. The country names this recent activity the ‘Chang’e-5’ mission.

The Chang’e 5 is a robotic Chinese lunar exploration mission consisting of a lander and a sample-return vehicle. The mission marks the country’s latest activity towards having a human colony on the moon by the 2030s.

China hopes to become the third nation to bring down samples from the moon. NASA astronauts had earlier checked that box during the Apollo moon landings. The Soviet Union’s Luna robotic landers also checked the box in 1976. These samples advanced the understanding of the solar system and its evolution.

David S.Draper, the deputy chief scientist at NASA, applauds and commends China for the Mission. In his words “This is an audacious mission. They are going to move the ball down the field in a very big way concerning understanding a lot of things that are important about lunar history”. Since the discovery of frozen waters on the moon, NASA had opened a project to send astronauts on new moon landings through its Artemis program.

So far China has successfully placed spacecraft on the moon with the Chang’e-3 and Chang’e-4 mission in December 2013 and January 2014 respectively. The Chang’e-4 spacecraft became the first to land on the far side of the moon. It still roves and studies lunar geology till date. China’s mission to the moon and collection of rock samples is calculated to be over in less than a month.
