Amazon has announced a collaboration with the National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center (IPR Center) with the aim of stopping counterfeit goods from entering the US. The collaboration is called Operation Fulfilled Action.

The effort will rely on intelligence from Amazon’s Counterfeit Crimes Unit, logistics company DHL, and US Customs and Border Patrol (CBP). The focus is to proactively stop the sale of counterfeit products.

Operation Fulfilled Action is relying on Amazon’s position as a marketplace for products and its distribution network. IPR Center and Amazon have previously shared information more recently collaborating on a crackdown on fraud related to COVID-19. However, this looks like a new long-term partnership.

Amazon says it already investigates and removes offenders and sellers of counterfeit goods on its platform. The company launched the Counterfeit Crimes Unit earlier in 2020; a move to proactively investigate sellers offering counterfeit goods, instead of just removing them from its platform.

The Unit has already taken legal action against some sellers for offering counterfeit products on both Amazon Marketplace and Instagram. Dharmesh Mehta, vice president of customer trust and partner support at Amazon, says that the partnership should allow the company to take a step further.

It will stop counterfeits at the border, regardless of where bad actors were intending to offer them, Mehta claims. This will not be piece of cake because counterfeit goods have a huge market. In 2009, its market was worth $1.9 trillion.
