Tesla might be a victim of its own success if CEO, Elon Musk’s advice about when to buy one of the company’s electric vehicles is considered carefully. Musk in a recent interview admitted that the quality of the company’s cars suffers each time the company dramatically scales up production.

The CEO also said that Tesla was making cars so fast near the end of 2020 that it was making a mess of the paint jobs. Musk says that contrary to the criticism Tesla is getting for the quality of its cars, the issues were not about quality control. The electric automaker has faced criticism over quality especially after it started making them at relatively high volumes with the Model 3 and Model Y.

“It took us a while to kind of iron out the production process. Friends ask me: ‘When should I buy a Tesla?’ And I’m like: ‘Well, either buy it right at the beginning or when the production reaches a steady-state. But during that production ramp, it’s super hard to be in vertical climb mode and get everything right on the little details,” Musk said in the interview with Industry Analyst Sandy Munro.

Munroe tears down all sorts of vehicles with a particular tear down and criticism of a Model 3 in 2018 gaining massive popularity. “I can’t imagine how they released this,” he said at the time.

Munroe also asked why his brand new Model 3 sedan had paint issues and another one he saw built a month later was “spectacular”. Musk in response said that Tesla had improved its paint quality “toward the end of last year, even in the course of December”.

“One of the things that was happening when we were ramping production was the paint wasn’t necessarily drying enough. So, it’s like, if you go faster… it’s like, you just discover these things. Like, If we knew them in advance, we would fix them in advance,” Musk said
