Microsoft has revealed its plans to add text predictions to Word in March 2021. The feature is to work similarly to Google Docs’ Smart Compose option which uses machine learning to predict what words an author will need to speed up document creation.

Microsoft had announced a beta of text predictions in 2020, however, it’s now on the Microsoft 365 roadmap to reach all Word users on Windows next month.

Using the feature, Microsoft Word will highlight grayed-out predictions when users are writing a document. Microsoft notes that the feature will help “users write more efficiently by predicting text quickly, timely and accurately”.

The user can accept text predictions on Microsoft Word by using the Tab key or hitting the Escape button to reject them. Users can also completely disable the Text predictions feature. Due to the use of AI to help with prediction accuracy, in time, the predictions will get better based on the user’s writing style

The software giant had begun rolling out identical text predictions in Outlook for Windows earlier in February 2021. The feature is aimed at helping Outlook users compose their emails faster. The Gmail-like text predictions had also rolled out to Outlook on the web in 2020. It launched with a feature that allows users to schedule when emails would be sent.
