Microsoft is testing out a new performance mode for its Edge browser and it’s calling it Performance Mode. “Performance mode helps you optimize speed, responsiveness, memory, CPU, and battery usage,” says Microsoft
The company further says that “Performance improvements might vary depending on your individual specifications and browser habits“. Performance mode is already available to some testers using the Microsoft Edge Canary version of the browser. However, other users can enable it manually with a flag.

The performance mode feature affects the Sleeping Tabs feature but it’s not very clear yet how it affects the browser itself. On performance mode, the Sleeping Tabs timeout is locked to five minutes.
Microsoft had introduced sleeping tabs in Edge earlier in 2021. The sleeping tabs allow the browser to automatically release system resources for inactive tabs when a number of tabs are open. This helps newer tabs run better and stop the browser from using up memory and CPU resources in the background.
Performance mode in Edge will likely have its biggest impact on the laptop’s battery life. Google has also been working on improving Chrome’s performance and battery usage in the last six months. In a November update, the app significantly improved CPU usage, and in a later update, the app improved its RAM and GPU usage. To use the mode, your browser has to be at least the Edge canary Version 91.0.856.0 (Official Build) canary (64-bit)
