Charles Okpaleke of Play Network studios has acquired the rights to produce a film based on the life of King Jaja of Opobo.
Okpaleke made the announcement via his Instagram saying his production company will take on the story from “an authentic perspective, having the privilege of sitting with King Dandeson Douglas, Jeki V (5th on the throne) during the sesquicentennial celebration of Opobo Kingdom”.
“I just want to tell our African stories man… Damnnnn!!” Okpaleke wrote. “There’s a lot about our history needed to be showcased. Myself and @ramseynouah are proud to announce that we have acquired the rights to tell the famed story of King Jaja from an authentic perspective.

About King Jaja of Opobo
King Jaja of Opobo, born Jubo Jubogha was a merchant prince and the founder of Opobo City in the now Rivers State. Originally born in Umuduruoha Amaigbo in present-day Imo State. He was taken at about the age of twelve as a slave in Bonny by Obua Ajukwu of Oguta, who had come to Bonny to buy slaves. Jumo Jumofe later took the name “Jaja”. He grew Opobo to control the oil trade, blocking off British traders and exporting directly to Liverpool without any British middlemen. In 1887, the British invited Jaja for a mediation but instead arrested him upon arrival. They exiled him to London and later to the West Indies Island. He was later granted permission to return to Nigeria five years later but died en route.
We are excited about this one and can’t wait to see Play Network Studios make the life of an iconic Nigerian leader into a film.
Charles Okpaleke made his big entry into the industry with the sequel to 90s classic “Living In Bondage”. It became a smattering success, pivoting to the highest-grossing film of 2019.
House Of Play has also made remakes of “Rattle Snake: The Ahanna Story” and “Nneka The Pretty Serpent”. They are also set to bring to our screens the sequel of 90s classic “Glamour Girls”.
