Alex Trebek, popular game show host of “Jeopardy!” since its debut in 1984 is dead. Trebek was 80 years old when he passed away early Sunday morning after battling pancreatic cancer for close to two years. In March 2019, he publicly announced his diagnosis of the disease that often develops without symptoms.
“Jeopardy! is saddened to share that Alex Trebek passed away peacefully at home early this morning, surrounded by family and friends,” Thank you, Alex.” the show tweeted.

“This is an enormous loss for the Jeopardy! staff, crew and all of Alex’s millions of fans. He was a legend of the industry that we were all lucky to watch night after night for 37 years,” Mike Richards, Jeopardy executive producer, said in a statement.

“Working beside him for the past year and a half as he heroically continued to host Jeopardy! was an incredible honour. His belief in the importance of the show and his willingness to push himself to perform at the highest level was the most inspiring demonstration of courage I have ever seen. His constant desire to learn, his kindness, and his professionalism will be with all of us forever.” Richards added.
Trebek revealed the news of his pancreatic cancer diagnosis to fans in March 2019. “I’m going to fight this and I’m going to keep working,” he said, returning to work a week later.
After undergoing months of treatment, Alex told viewers in August that he had finished his treatment and was doing better. However, one month later he announced that he was once again undergoing chemotherapy.
