Grammy award-winning American singer Alicia Keys has further opened up about her famous decision to stop wearing makeup in 2016.

“Makeup was a big thing for me; I had been wearing it since I was, like, 16 years old,” the “Girl on Fire” singer, 39, told Glamour UK in her cover story for the magazine’s fall/winter 2020 issue.

“And then, as I got into the music world, it was what you did every day to do your television, or to do your shoot. So, I did it because I thought that’s what you’re supposed to do. And I realized I became addicted to it; I didn’t feel comfortable without it.”

“I swear it was the strongest, most empowered, most free, and most honestly beautiful that I have ever felt. I don’t want to cover up anymore. Not my face, not my mind, not my soul, not my thoughts, not my dreams, not my struggles, not my emotional growth. Nothing.” the Grammy winner wrote.

Keys skipped makeup for a number of red carpets and performances that year. “I’m not a slave to makeup. I’m not a slave to not wearing makeup either. I get to choose at any given moment. That’s my right,” She told Allure.
