Amazon Announces 115-Megawatt Wind Farm In Ireland To Power AWS Data Centers

Amazon seems really intent on being 100% renewable energy-dependent by 2025 and it has just announced a new 115-megawatt (MW) wind farm in Ireland. It says that this project will power its Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers in the country.

The company says that the wind farm will start to operate by 2022. It says that its overall aim is to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 and it wants to start with its power sources. There are also two other renewable energy projects in Esk, Co. Cork and Meenbog, Co. Donegal.

These three projects are all in Ireland and will start operating by 2022. Amazon says the Esk, Co. Cork wind farm will be operational by September 2020 and the other in Meenbog, Co. Donegal will start working in early 2022.

In a statement, the e-commerce giant wrote; “In total, these three projects are projected to add 229 MW of renewable energy to the Irish grid each year, reducing carbon emissions by 366,000 tonnes of CO2 each year, and producing enough renewable energy to power 185,000 Irish homes, per annum.”

Amazon adds that its wind farm projects are taking off a burden of €229 million ($270.2 million) from the shoulders of the Irish energy consumers. It says that this is not the end as it will continue to announce more renewable energy projects in the country.

In addition, the company says that it is helping Ireland preserve water by not using it to cool its data center systems. As this is the usual custom among large data center operators. Rather, Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers in Ireland uses outside air to cool servers.

It only uses water for about 5% of the year to cool the air to remove heat. Amazon touts its commitment to keep contributing to Ireland’s effort in making renewable energy its priority.
