Amazon warehouse workers at the JFK8 fulfillment center in Staten Island voted to become a union and join Amazon Labor Union.
The nearly 5,000 employees participated in a hotly contested election with 2,654 yes votes, 2,131 no, and 67 challenges. Meanwhile, Amazon did not pretend to have been neutral about the ballot.
“We’re disappointed with the outcome of the election in Staten Island because we believe having a direct relationship with the company is best for our employees. We’re evaluating our options, including filing objections based on the inappropriate and undue influence by the NLRB that we and others (including the National Retail Federation and U.S. Chamber of Commerce) witnessed in this election,” the company’s statement read.

While Amazon may be disappointed, the workers who voted yes are not. Also, the Amazon labor Union had been trying to get New York Amazon facility workers to join it for almost two years. It had filed several requests, including a recent one in December 2021.
It is no secret that tech companies do not like employees forming unions, and for the online market platform, its own woes may be worse. The Amazon Labor Union is not a part of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) or any other union for that matter. It is run by Christian Smalls, a former Amazon employee who was fired after organising a walkout.
The JFK8 employees managing to get this win may inspire other warehouse workers to do the same.
