Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo in a new research note has announced that its long-rumored mixed reality headset could weigh less than 150 grams. This would make it much lighter than many other headsets on the market, Kuo said as reported by 9to5Mac.

The lighter weight would translate the headset being easier to wear for long periods of time. For comparison, the Oculus Quest 2 weighs 503 grams, Microsoft’s HoloLens 2 weighs 645 grams, and the Valve Index weighs 809 grams.

Apple’s headset would even be lighter than Google’s Daydream View, which is actually a VR headset designed to hold your phone, weighing 220 grams. The new Apple headset could even weigh less than the iPhone12 which weighs 164 grams.

Bloomberg reported in January that the headset may have both virtual reality and augmented reality features. It also said won’t launch until at least 2022. The Information in February 2021 report says that the device could ship “as early as next year”. The report also has a sketch of what the headset could look like, including mesh fabric in the front and Apple Watch-style bands in the back.

The headset is codenamed “N301,” and could have 8K displays, eye-tracking technology, and more than a dozen cameras to both track your hand movements and capture footage that can be displayed inside the headset, according to The Information. Kuo also reports that the device will have plastic lenses, an ultra-short focal length, and Micro-OLED displays.

According to The Information, Apple is discussing pricing the headset at around $3,000. This will make it more expensive than the $299 Oculus Quest 2.
