Android 14 dessert name revealed to be “Upside Down Cake”

Despite being a year and several months away from release, Android 14 already has a rumoured dessert name, Upside Down Cake.

Before Android 10, Google used to launch Android versions officially with their dessert names. Lollipop, Oreo, and so on are some of the names that readily come to mind from the legendary days of Android version nicknames.

However, while the company has stopped shipping its OS by nicknames, favouring the boring number system, this has not stopped its employees from using them internally.

In an open-source filing of Android Gerrit, mobile software development community XDA Developers uncovered that the next Android OS could be the one referred to as Upside Down Cake.

The unusual name likely comes from the fact that the names have gotten to the letter “U,” and there are likely limited options for dessert names starting with that letter.

Of course, the monikers usually have nothing to do with the new tech that the software version will bring. So, there is no need to panic that when Android 14 drops (likely in September 2023), it will turn your device upside down.

Besides the dessert name leak, no detail has leaked yet as the operating system is still in its early stages, and most of the improvements it will be bringing would depend on Android 13 feedback, which is not yet publicly available.
