Beninese music icon Angelique Kidjo won the award for Best World Music at the 2020 Grammys, dedicating her award to Burna Boy. The award show took place on 26th January 2020 at the Staples Center, Los Angeles.
Angelique Kidjo received a nomination in this category for her album, “Celia”, alongside Altin Gün for “Gece”; Bokanté and Metropole Orkest conducted by Jules Buckley for “What Heat”; Nathalie Joachim with Spektral Quartet for “Fanm D’Ayiti”; and Burna Boy’s “African Giant”.
In her acceptance speech, while receiving her award, Angelique applauded Burna Boy as one of the new breeds of African music.
She said:
“Four years ago on this stage, I was telling you that the new generations of artists coming from Africa gonna take you by storm and the time has come. This is for Burna Boy. Burna Boy is among those young artists from Africa that are changing the way our continent is perceived and the way African music has been the bedrock of every music.”
However, Nigerians have reacted to Angelique Kidjo’s win at the Grammys. Some are of the opinion that although Burna Boy did not win, his album received global recognition.

Burna boy didn’t win the grammy award but the fact Kidjo recognized his vision is worth it as well. More wins king @burnaboypic.twitter.com/UxeIwYfiuv

Burna had an entire body of work nominated for a Grammy. Not a song. Not someone else’s song he was featured on. An album. It’s a testament to the work he’s put in & the quality he’s put out. This is what his fans should be focusing on instead of embarrassing themselves online

I’m disappointed, not sad.
Burna Boy has always made classic Albums. What he previously lacked was the International recognition & respect. He has both now in abundance, arguably now the most recognised Nigerian artist Globally.
He will make another Grammy worthy album.#Burna

Angelique Kidjo defeating Burna boy is not by mistake, she is too legend to be overlooked and we all know that. Winning is not a matter of single album, it is an accumulation of the past.

Angelique Kidjo released her album, “Celia”, which won tribute a Grammy Award, on 19th April 2019. She dedicated the album to Cuban singer Celia Cruz. The songs on the album span across all of Celia Cruz’s career reinvented with an Afrobeat feel.
We celebrate with Angelique Kidjo on her win at the Grammys.
