Reviews of the Apple Mac Studio, announced on 8 March 2022, are beginning to roll in and as always, before parting with your money, see what experts are saying about Apple’s latest beast.
Launched on International Women’s Day, the desktop PC is aimed at professional creatives. It pairs powerfully with the M1 Max or the brand-new M1 Ultra, released the same day. Despite its minimalist design, the Apple Mac Studio has several offerings, and on first look, it is aesthetically pleasing. But, what do the experts it was made for think about it?
What’s good about Apple Mac Studio?
The Verge’s Monica Chin could not help herself after testing the device, and the first thing she could say was, ‘this is freaking fast!’ In her review, she adds that it is heavy enough to discourage you from moving it about. So, you have to leave it on your desk, as it was meant to. Then, there are the clever arrangements of the ports in the front of the device. “There are actually ports on the front, including an SD card slot, which is a huge benefit for creative professionals. I was not prepared for how happy these accessible ports would make me. Every time I could plug something in without having to get up and duck behind my machine, it just made my day a little bit better,” she wrote.

Matt Hanson of Tech Radar also agreed with the advantage of the port placements. On the physical aspect, Hanson’s thoughts on the Apple Mac Studio include its compactness. Then, there is also the fact that it is quite silent for such a powerful machine. For PC Mag, Brian Westover also touched on the device’s physical attributes. He said it had a ‘stunning industrial design.’
However, the Apple Mac Studio’s fast performance is something every reviewer agreed on. Alex Wawro of Tom’s Guide wrote: “I wasn’t disappointed: the Studio had no trouble powering through my daily workload, and even when I had 30+ tabs open in Chrome with multiple 4K videos streaming while listening to Apple Music, I didn’t notice a single hiccup.”
Also, while it is not a gaming device, it is able to run games with graphics set on high.
With these high praises, is there anything bad about the machine?
What’s bad about Apple Mac Studio?
Not much.
The general downer in all the Apple Mac Studio reviews I read was the pricing. It costs $1,999 to buy the machine itself (with the default M1 Max chip) and another $1,599 for the Studio Monitor in order to enjoy it. This is not all because if you are looking to experience the kind of ‘blazing-fast performance’ reviewers are talking about; you will also need to buy the M1 Ultra, which will set you back an additional $2,000.
While the additional configurations appear to be optional, the default only gives you an entry-level model. If you settle for this, your experience may not tally with what you have read in the other part of this article. For example, Wawro mentioned above confessed that the entire setup used in his review cost about $6,000. Meanwhile, Westover says that his cost about $5,245.
There is also the fact that when you buy the default Apple Mac Studio, you also have to buy a keyboard and mouse separately.
However, if you have the money to spare, the Apple Mac Studio review shows that it is worth the investment.
