Apple’s most recent iPhones come without the Touch ID fingerprint scanner, using Face ID for an extra layer of security. Most people feel the touch ID is more reliable when it comes to security.
Which is why the news about the Touch ID is welcome, as a more ideal authentication method. Think of a situation like trying to unlock your phone while it’s lying flat on a table or when you’re wearing sunglasses (some iPhone models cannot recognise the owner). Or in some other situation that is unnatural.
Rumour has it that the iPhone 12 will again feature Touch ID with a slightly different twist. According to the Economic Daily News, Apple has arranged to meet with a Taiwanese manufacturer GIS, to discuss the possibility of an iPhone with an under-display fingerprint scanner.
Most probably will come in an iPhone due in 2020 or 2021, the fingerprint scanner is to be Qualcomm’s ultrasonic sensor and GIS’ components.
The Qualcomm ultrasonic sensor is used in Samsung’s Galaxy S10 range. However, it was recently found to have a flaw, sparking rumors that it would be discontinued altogether on Galaxy S11 devices.
Now, the new version of Qualcomm’s ultrasonic sensor will be larger, which should combat the suffered by the Samsung Galaxy S range.
