Apple TV+ To Bid For English Premier League Broadcast Rights

Apple TV+ is allegedly preparing a bid for the right to broadcast English Premier League matches, according to a report by the Daily Mail.

The streaming arm of the iPhone maker has been gearing up to take the entertainment storm by storm with various acquisitions. As Apple Insider notes, the division already has secured the rights to show Major League Soccer (MLS) matches for 2023.

However, adding the English Premier League (EPL) to its portfolio is no walk in the park. According to data provided by SPORT+MARKT, the tournament recorded an annual TV audience of 4.7 billion. Also, the company claimed that games were watched in 643 million homes, bars and restaurants around the world.

Sky Sports and BT Sport still have a three-year contract with the league, but that is set to expire in 2025 and bids are already coming in to replace the broadcasters.

People with knowledge of the situation say that Apple’s bid of $6.2 billion for three years is currently not enough for the club owners. The company had allegedly paid $2.5 billion for its MLS rights.

Besides the EPL, Apple TV+ also has sights on streaming rights of the Dutch Eredivisie soccer league, which is valued at about $156 million to $208 million per annum. Then, there is the MLB Friday Night Baseball deal it already cornered.

The streaming company is not the only one in the running for sports streaming rights. It is believed that several tech companies are also in the fray for the EPL broadcast rights and YouTube already secured the NFL Sunday Ticket deal.

Apple TV+ costs $6.99 per month and if you buy a new Apple device, you get three months free. With an average of one million viewers per game, the English Premier League could be a major turning point for Apple TV+. Although, it could launch a Season Pass plan as it did for the MLS.
