Apple store’s employees at the Cumberland Mall, Atlanta, have decided to call off their union election in June due to intimidation. The organisation attempting to unionise the workers, Communications Workers of America (or CWA), has made the call to withdraw the election request.
“Apple’s repeated violations of the National Labor Relations Act have made a free and fair election impossible,” the organisation said in a statement.
Apple has been accused of doing everything in its power to ensure that the election swung in its favour. Starting out by hiring notorious anti-union lawyers and sending anti-union memos to workers through their team leads.

Recall that a leaked video recently emerged of a VP discouraging employees from joining unions. And, the CWA has filed complaints with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) to make captive-audience meetings illegal; it is also one of the tactics that Apple has been accused of employing.
Besides trying to intimidate workers, the iPhone makers have tried to use a friendly approach as well. It is raising the wages for retail workers by $2 an hour as pay is one of the demands of the union agitators. However, it may not be enough to satisfy everyone as there are requests that workers hope to achieve through a union that does not involve money.
There are also concerns that COVID-19 issues could prevent some workers from voting at all. Yet, unofficial polls have shown that majority of Apple workers are in favour of joining a union.
