Summary: Bill Gates has criticised Elon Musk vision of colonising Mars, saying that creating more vaccine is a better use of money. He further said that the Tesla CEO cannot be considered a philanthropist just yet, but he might be called one in future.
Philanthropist and billionaire Bill Gates has said in a recent interview with BBC that creating more vaccine is a better use of money than trying to colonise Mars, which is what Elon Musk is aiming for.
This is not the first time that Gates would be on the other side of Musk and it definitely won’t be the last. However, the Microsoft co-founder added that the Tesla boss could one day be seen as a philanthropist, but not just yet.
The interviewer had asked the recently divorced 67-year-old if Elon Musk could be considered a philanthropist given the many innovations he has overseen, prompting the reply we paraphrased.

According to a CNBC coverage of the story, the interview was broadcast on Friday evening. Gates criticised SpaceX’s spending on the Starship rocket, which Musk has said would be instrumental in interplanetary explorations, starting with Mars.
“It’s actually quite expensive to go to Mars. You can buy measles vaccines and save lives for a thousand dollars per life saved. It just kind of grounds you. Don’t go to Mars,” Gates said.
Besides their longtime passive-aggressive feuds over the years, another way Gates’ recent comment could rub Elon Musk the wrong way is because of his view on vaccinations.
In January, in reply to a Tweet that talks about the side effects of COVID-19 vaccines, Musk had claimed that he suffered ‘major’ side effects after he took the second booster shot.
“Felt like I was dying for several days. Hopefully, no permanent damage, but I dunno,” the Twitter boss said.
He also added that it was not his choice to take the jab but he had to because he wanted to visit Tesla Giga Berlin and it was a requirement.
