A bill to end the stigmatisation of r*pe victims has already passed second reading in the Senate. This is following several incidents of r*pe recently around the country. The bill is sponsored by Sani Musa, an APC senator from Niger State

According to Premium Times, The bill is titled “A Bill for an Act to Prohibit the Stigmatisation of Victims of R*pe and Insurgency in order to encourage victims of r*pe to testify in court and victims of insurgency to be reintegrated into the community of his or choice.”

While it is unclear how this bill will be enforced, Senator Sani Musa says the objective of the bill is to provide a legal and institutional framework for the protocol for the reintegration of victims of r*pe and insurgency in the country.

According to him, the bill will provide a new lease of life for r*pe victims in the country. The bill passed the second plenary reading on Tuesday.

“We must ensure that prosecution for r*pe and brutality against women is accelerated in our judicial process. Let justice be served in a way it should be served”

Speaker of the house Ahmed Lawan in his remark also said the house needs to take action quickly. “We have to be in a haste to pass the legislation in order to arrest the situation.” he said.

The bill has been referred to The Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters. They are to report back to the upper chamber in four weeks.

This is a positive step in the right direction from the Senate and we await the development of this bill.
