Lagos State Governor Babjide Sanwo-Olu met with representatives of Bolt, Uber and other ride-hailing companies in the state to agree to reduced regulation fees.
At the beginning of the week, 10th August 2020, the Lagos State Government had announced new regulation guidelines. It had required ride-hailing operators to pay provisional license fees of N10 million for every 1000 cars it has. If they have above 1000 cars, they were required to pay N25 million.
Additionally, they would also have to pay an annual license renewal fee of N5 million per 1000 cars and N10 million per 1000+ cars. The government also mandated that all vehicles used for e-hailing must not be older than three years old.

However, in a Tweet late yesterday, 14th August 2020, Governor Sanwo-Olu announced:
After meeting with representatives of e-hailing taxi services, we amicably resolved issues around regulations that affect their operations in the state. Effective from August 27, the new regulations will come in to effect. pic.twitter.com/5ks2yzcWaW

The new agreement has some of the following changes:
— Service tax for Road Improvement Fund will be N20 per trip.
— Both the provisional license fee and renewal fee are reduced by 20 per cent.
— Drivers of the ride-hailing companies must get all necessary documents and licenses within 90 days.
The new taxation guidelines had raised dust when it became public. Many social media users are still commenting on the issue calling the Lagos State Government ‘a taskmaster’. This comes on the back of the NIPOST taxation saga.
In addition, another issue that social media users raised was transparency: would the funds be put to good use and well accounted for?, they ask.
