A court has denied Britney Spears father Jamie Spears’s rights to have exclusive control of her estate. Jamie Spears was requesting for the conservatory rights he’s held over her estate and finances since 2008 to be retained.

However, the courts on Thursday, February 11th ruled that Jamie Spears must share equal conservatory rights with private trust company Bessemer Trust.

Jamie Spears had objected to Bessemer’s involvement. In his submission to the courts, he said it would limit the control he’s had for so long. The courts however flung aside his objections. He and Bessemer Trust will now work together to come up with a plan on how to manage her estate.

Britney has contested her father’s control over her finances since 2018 saying she was “afraid” of him

Babs Gray, host of the BritneyGram podcast, told the BBC outside the court: “It hasn’t changed anything much today… I don’t think a lot of forward movement will happen until Britney’s lawyer actually files to get her out of the conservatorship.”

After her very public breakdown in 2008, the courts made her father, Jamie, her conservator, giving him rights to control major aspects of her life and decisions including her finances and healthcare. A conservatorship is when the courts appoint a guardian or protector to manage the affairs of a person due to mental or physical limitations.

Britney Spears has since shared will no longer give live performances until she’s out of the conservatorship programme. She hasn’t performed in two years.
