Electric bike company recalls folding bikes over multiple injuries

Brompton, an electric folding bike company, has issued a recall of all its bicycles sold between May 2019 and March 2022. The recall is over a lockup malfunction that has caused nine injuries and put two customers in the hospital.

According to a consumer agency, Brompton e-bikes’ users have reported being in an accident because something got caught in their bicycle’s mudguard and front tire, leading to the wheel locking up and accidents.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) agency mentioned that the crashes had led to significant injuries such as head and facial impact, broken bones, shoulder dislocation, bruising, and chipped teeth.

The affected bikes include the Brompton Electric M2L, H2L, M6L, and H6L models, which cost between $3,500 and $3,800, according to The VergeTo fix the issue, the company plans to change the front mudguard stay and flap to create enough space between the tire and the mudguard.

The issue is quite serious because something as commonplace as road debris could lead to accidents while riding Brompton e-bikes.

The June recall is not the first time that the company has had this kind of recall. In 2021, there was a recall for hundreds of the bikes to be returned for a software update and bug fix.

The idea behind Brompton’s folding bikes is that they can be folded into a small enough shape to be carried on trains, taxi boats, ferries, car boots, and cabs.
