Angelique Kidjo won the award for Best World Music at the 2020 Grammys, which she dedicated to Burna Boy.
She received a nomination in this category for her album, “Celia”, alongside Altin Gün for “Gece”; Bokanté and Metropole Orkest conducted by Jules Buckley for “What Heat”; Nathalie Joachim with Spektral Quartet for “Fanm D’Ayiti”; and Burna Boy’s “African Giant”.
In her acceptance speech, while receiving her award, Angelique applauded Burna Boy as one of the new breeds of African musicians changing the way Africa is being perceived.
Nigerians had anticipated Burna Boy’s win at the 2020 Grammys that held on the 26th of January 2020. However, the news that he did not win was greeted with mixed reactions from his fans.
While some felt that Angelique Kidjo is a music legend that deserves the award, others felt that Burna is still a winner as long as he was nominated for the Grammys.
