OpenAI has launched ChatGPT API, which will allow paying customers to build the AI technology into their apps, websites, products and services.
The API is one of the ways the research company is exploring to start making revenue and is meant to apply to enterprise customers.
In an interview with TechCrunch, Greg Brockman, the company’s president, chairman and co-founder, revealed that this latest release was not informed by the growing interest in the chatbot. It appears that OpenAI planned to launch it all along and only needed to build the API up to the quality standard it envisioned.

This version is powered by gpt-3.5-turbo, a more powerful variant of the AI model that powers ChatGPT and one that is optimised and more responsive.
Clients are charged $0.002 per 1,000 tokens, or about 750 words. Snap, Quizlet, Instacart and Shopify are already building the tech into their offerings like My AI, Q-Chat tutor, personalized assistant for shopping recommendations, and Ask Instacart, respectively.
Brockman is also assuring businesses that there have been necessary improvements to protect the AI technology from prompt-based attacks and other malicious attempts to compromise it.
One of these advanced measures is a Chat Markup Language, or ChatML, which allows ChatGPT process text as a sequence of messages together with metadata instead of raw text represented as a series of tokens. The model would also be getting frequent updates as well.
