Activision is currently celebrating the record-breaking sales of its Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 video game. The company revealed that the game sold about $800 million in its opening weekend.
By comparison, its 2011 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 sold $775 million in its first five days. Also, besides beating the performance of its previous release, the game publisher is also comparing its performance to other entertainment forms.
Activision mentioned that top-earning movies of 2022 like Top Gun: Maverick and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness had sold $250 million and $450 million, respectively. Putting its video game above the biggest movies of the year.

However, it is important to point out that the two forms of media are very different. For movies, despite theater tickets being cheaper than games, there is the constraint of hall capacity to consider.
“Thank you to our talented team that has created magic through extraordinary artistry and technology, and to the global community of players who find joy and connection through Call of Duty. This milestone belongs to them,” the video game company had said in its statement.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 launched on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X. It is currently priced at $70 and is the sequel to the game’s reboot, which began with the 2019 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.
A saner comparison for Activision would have been to EA’s FIFA 23, which sold about $700 million in its first week from selling about 10.3 million units. We will have to wait for the numbers to see just how many copies Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 sells in its opening week before giving it the title of highest selling video game of 2022.
