Two genetic engineers in Barcelona have said that death will become optional by the year 2045 as a human would be able to live forever. They believe that the ageing process will become reversible. The presentation was published in a book titled The Death of Death.

Cambridge mathematician, David Wood, and Venezuelan born Spanish engineer José Luis Cordeiro say immortality is real. The founders of the operating system, Symbian said it was scientifically possible to never die.
According to them, in about 27 years, humans will no longer die of natural causes or illness. People will only be able to meet their deaths if they are involved in accidents. Old age, they say, should now be classified as an illness and there should be publicly-funded research to find its cure.
They believe Nanotechnology alongside other new techniques is key to manipulating genetics. The process will involve turning unhealthy genes into healthy ones. Thereby, eliminating dead cells from the body and repairing damaged cells.
Technology will also be able to allow the treatment of stem cells and 3D printing of vital organs. Cordeiro explains that he has chosen not to die and he will be younger than he currently is in 30 years.

Ageing happens as a result of certain parts of the DNA in chromosomes. The cells in the body excluding the red and s*x cells which have 23 pairs become shorter. They believe that reversing ageing will involve elongating these elements of the DNA.
These elements in the DNA called, Telomeres become damaged and shortened with the passage of time. Vices like smoking, drinking, and air pollution are however reasons why the process can speed up even longer.
The duo believes that illnesses like cancer will be curable within the next 10 years. Major international corporations like Google will join the field of medicine too as they are beginning to come to these realisations too. Microsoft is also reportedly working on a cure to cancer.
Wood and Cordeiro explained that 1952 saw the discovery that cancer cells were immortal. They said the surgeon who kept the tumour from a cervical cancer patient can confirm that the cancer cells were still active till date.
Speaking on the treatment, Cordeiro says,
“At first, it’ll be expensive, but with a competitive market the price will gradually fall because it’ll be something that benefits everyone.”
“Technology, when it’s new, is poor and extremely expensive, but it eventually becomes democratic and mainstream and becomes cheaper,” he added.
The engineers say they have been trying out the technique illegally for years and it has been going great so far.
This revelation leaves a lot of unanswered questions but would you want to live forever?
