Japanese carmaker Toyota has released its first fully electric vehicle for the public. The new compact SUV vehicle has a sleek design with a Tesla-like steering yoke and an optional solar roof.
The new car was first announced at this year’s Shanghai Auto Show, with plans for 15 new electric vehicles to hit the road by 2025 according to Toyota. The company says the car will be available in the middle of 2022.
Toyota calls this new sport utility vehicle the “BZ4X,” and it will rival the likes of the Volkswagen ID 4, Model X, Model Y, Kia e-Niro etc. Toyota quirky yoke steering design has a “wing-shape,” that functions with a steer-by-wire system.

The company argues that its new Yoke steering only needs to be up to 150 degrees from side to side. This means it will a lot easier to manoeuvre and make turns without changing grips while turning.
Toyota says the BZ4X will be jointly produced with another Japanese company carmaker, Subaru. This will be built on the e-TNGA platform for electric vehicles across Toyota and Subaru.
For the exteriors, the BZ4X electric SUV draws a lot of inspiration from the loved Toyota RAV 4 compact SUV. Toyota says the steering yoke is also optional for those who don’t like its quirky design.
Unlike the Tesla Model Y, this new vehicle features a lot of physical buttons and a cluster like interior design. This move by the biggest car manufacturer Toyota is a commitment to transit to electric vehicles in the future.
