The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in its new guidance says that fully vaccinated people “can travel safely within the United States”. The agency had previously advised people to “delay” both domestic and international travel even if they had been vaccinated.

This guidance also allows fully vaccinated travelers to avoid self-quarantine during domestic travel. They also can skip COVID-19 tests before and after a trip except their destination requires it.

Fully vaccinated people will however still need to be tested for COVID-19 before returning to the US and upon arrival from international travel. They will however not need to self-quarantine. “International travel poses additional risks and even fully vaccinated travelers are at increased risk for getting and possibly spreading new COVID-19 variants,” the CDC said in its guidance.

The CDC guidance also requires fully vaccinated travelers to still wear a mask. They are also to wash their hands often and maintain six feet of physical distance from other people. The agency had in March 2021 announced that groups of fully vaccinated people can gather indoors without masks.

The CDC classifies a person as fully vaccinated two weeks after their second shot of the Pfizer / BioNTech or Moderna vaccine or two weeks after a single shot of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

Air travel is gradually returning to normalcy with airlines now planning to sell middle seats again from May 2021. However, the CDC still has concerns that holiday travel could contribute to an increase in COVID.
