Electronics giant Sony launched a new artificial intelligence unit on Wednesday which they hope will change the way we eat and cook.
The Sony research arm’s newly created AI will operate in Japan, the United States, and Europe. It also focuses on Sony’s traditional areas of gaming, imaging and sensor equipment, as well as “gastronomy”.
The firm which produces the PlayStation franchise is the latest multinational tech company wanting a piece of the pie in the food business, where data are increasingly driving new dishes to pique the palate.
“The field of food requires a study of molecular structures. By using AI and its analytical capacity, we can create new things,” Sony spokesman Shinichi Tobe told AFP.
“It involves taste, but also aroma. Through sensing technologies, we can perhaps create new dishes that will please the human sense of taste,” he said. “AI and robotics will not replace chefs. We are aiming to offer new tools to expand their creativity with AI and robotics,” Tobe added.

The Tokyo-based conglomerate is not the only tech company following this trend. IBM teamed up with seasoning maker McCormick to use AI in flavour and food product development earlier this year.
Robotic Signature
Sony foresees the creation of a robot-based kitchen to help elderly people make meals at home in the future, but without the use of open flames. It might also result in the creation of restaurants where robots cook in front of guests.
“There might be ways of cooking that can only be done by robotics. It might be about temperature control. Maybe about precise timings of when or where to apply heat,” Tobe said.
There is an indication that the Japanese giants have patented an AI solution that could be implemented in the PlayStation 5.
Sony AI will be headed up by Hiroaki Kitano, who is the president and CEO of Sony Computer Science Laboratories along with the American Sony AI site led by Peter Stone.
