The Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday extended the lockdown in Lagos, Ogun and FCT Abuja by one week.

 

The President made the announcement while addressing citizens.

 

“The lockdown in the FCT, Lagos & Ogun States shall subsist remain in place until these new ones come into effect on Saturday, 2nd May 2020 at 9 am,” Buhari said in his national broadcast.

 

He said that a nationwide curfew has been put in place and movement will be restricted from 8 pm to 6 am.

For Kano State, The President imposed a mandatory two weeks lockdown to curb the spread of the virus. The President also enjoined state governments and other sectors to help in the mass production of face masks.

 

“State Governments, corporate organizations, and philanthropists are encouraged to support the production of cloth masks for citizens,” he said

Here are the highlights from his speech

1) There will be an overnight curfew from 8 pm to 6 am. This means all movements will be prohibited during this period except for essential services

 

2) There will be a ban on non-essential inter-state passenger travel until further notice.

 

3)  Partial and controlled interstate movement of goods and services will be allowed for the movement of goods and services from producers to consumers.

 

4) The use of face masks or coverings in public is mandatory. Also is maintaining physical distancing and personal hygiene.

 

On 30th March 2020, President Muhammadu Buhari imposed lockdown in Lagos, FCT, and Ogun State. The President extended the lockdown by another two weeks 13th April, as the number of confirmed cases continued to rise.

 

This new lockdown extension came hours shy of the NCDC declaring 64 new cases in the country. As 11:20 pm 27th April, Nigeria records 1337 confirmed cases of coronavirus with 255 discharged and 40 deaths.
