In a rather dramatic turn of event, the governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde has ordered an all-day curfew in the state as the number of COVID-19 confirmed cases reaches three and suspected cases spike to 84.

Since COVID-19 entered Nigeria, its economic powerhouse, Lagos, has suffered the most. However, on 28th March 2020, this changed as Oyo State reported that it is suspecting a large number of cases. Yet, it has confirmed only three so far.

In a Twitter thread on Saturday, the governor revealed that he is not taking chances with the viral infection. He announced to the public:

“The COVID-19 confirmation test for two suspected cases has come back positive. The isolation process has been initiated. 84 Persons of Interest have been identified, and contact tracing and collection of samples have commenced.

“The state’s diagnostic centre set up in collaboration with the University College Hospital is now ready. The @NCDCgov certification is still pending but the Director-General of NCDC has made a pre-statement about the molecular laboratory in Oyo State.

“The index case remains stable and is still under observation in the isolation unit at Agbami Chest Centre, Jericho. The number of confirmed cases in Oyo State is now three.”

Thus, he is enforcing a curfew from dusk-to-dawn starting today night, Sunday 29th March 2020. It will last from 7 pm to 6 am the next day. He also announced that there are to be no gatherings of more than 10 people anywhere in Oyo State.

All markets will also remain shut unless it sells perishable food items. In addition, governor Makinde suspended all inter-state transportation into and out of the state. Only vehicles carrying food items, medical, pharmaceutical and petroleum products will be allowed.

While this announcement is only for this Sunday, he adds that there will be a weekly review.

The Guardian reports that Oyo State governor Seyi Makinde had also sacked his aide on digital media Muritala Adigun. He likely sacked Adigun after he posted pictures of Lagos State Government’s interventions to tackle the spread of coronavirus as that of Oyo State.
