Got a new phone? Here is how to move all your data to a new Android phone

With new smartphones coming out almost every other week, you may find yourself looking for an easy way to transfer all your data from an old phone to a new Android phone. Well, look no further.

One of the easiest way to do this is from the get-go. As soon as you turn on your new Android phone, you will see a prompt and step-by-step instructions on how to transfer all the data on your old phone to the new one.

However, when you have a two-factor authentication app protecting your old device, like Google Authenticator, you may be required to do more than just a few taps.

How to move data to a new Android phone

1. Turn on your new device and tap on “Get Started.”

2. Next, you will get a prompt telling you to insert a SIM, if you don’t have one inserted. Note, you can ignore this step by tapping on “Skip.”

3. Then, you can connect to a Wi-Fi network or choose to set the device up offline.

4. After this step, you will be asked to copy all your apps and data from your old device, and all you need to do is tap on “Next.” You can opt to start on a clean slate by choosing the “Don’t Copy” option.

5. If you have chosen to copy, you will need to turn on your old device and unlock it. Then, tap on “Next” when prompted.

Transfer data from old Android phone using a cable

  • You can use a USB cable to connect both devices (if you have one) and then, you can verify on your old phone and accept by tapping “Copy.”
  • Also, you may need to enter to your PIN or confirm fingerprint or facial recognition.
  • Your data should start being transferred to your new phone.

Transfer data from old Android phone without a cable

  • Select the “No cable” option at the left bottom corner of the screen if you don’t have the necessary cable to do what is required.
  • Next, tap on “Continue” and “Next” after reading the caution prompts.
  • On your old phone, open the Google app (if you do not get the pop-up to set up your new device, if you do, tap on “Set up”).
  • You will be asked to verify if four shapes on your old phone matches those on your new device and if they match, tap on “Next” on your old phone.
  • Next, tap on “Copy” and select what you want to transfer, such as apps, photos & videos, audio, SMS, call history and other settings.
  • You should tap on “Copy” again to start the transfer.

Remember that cable transfer is typically faster than transferring your data without one. Also, apps like Google Calendar, Contacts, Photos, and Gmail sync automatically across devices. Meanwhile, you can’t move downloads, ringtones, and apps that aren’t from the Play Store to your new device.
