Delta Airlines plans to invest up to $200 million in air taxi startup Joby Aviation to create an electric home-to-airport service. The domestic and international travel airline has already invested $60 million in the startup.
In its Tuesday announcement, Delta Airlines said that it was willing to shell out more investments if Joby Aviation met some milestones. The service will start in New York City and Los Angeles using Joby’s five-seat electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.
The companies plan to extend to more cities and cover the UK soon. Their original agreement is for a five-year contract, with an option to extend it. The service will take passengers from the airport to their homes (or hotels), as the name suggests.

While there is no information on when the service will launch, Joby CEO JoeBen Bevirt already promises a time-shortened trip. He mentioned that the famous Manhattan to JFK Airport trip, which usually takes almost 50 minutes to 1 hour, would be completed in 10 minutes if you use their taxi service. He also said he could have a commercial service as early as 2024.
For now, there is no air taxi company with the clearance to fly just above cities. So, even if Joby Aviation does have a vehicle ready, they would still undergo regulatory processes that could take years.
However, the air taxi service has been in existence since 2009 and before Delta Airlines, Toyota and Uber have previously backed it financially.
