“The Milkmaid”, Nigeria’s official submission for the 2021 Oscars, did not make the shortlist for the International Feature Film (IFF) category.
The Nigerian Oscars Selection Committee (NOSC) had announced the film as the country’s selection for the award ceremony slated for 25th April.
The executive committee for the IFF category of the Oscars had in January also confirmed its eligibility to compete with films from 93 countries.
In a statement on Tuesday 9th February, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) announced the first shortlist of 15 films in the IFF category of this year’s Oscars but “The Milkmaid” didn’t make the cut.
“Night of the Kings” from Ivory Coast and “The Man Who Sold His Skin” from Tunisia, were the only two African films that made the shortlist.

Nigeria’s first-ever entry for the Oscars in 2019 was “LionHeart”, 2018 film produced by Genevieve Nnaji.
The Nigeria Oscars Submission Committee (NOSC), the body in charge of submitting films to the Academy Awards for Nigeria has fervently pursued an opportunity for Nollywood to participate in the global film awards.
In 2019, its submission, Genevieve Nnaji’s “Lionheart” was disqualified for not meeting the language requirement. The film received criticism from many for that shortcoming.
“The Milkmaid”, however, became the first Nigerian film eligible to compete at the Oscars. Directed by Desmond Ovbiagele “The Milkmaid” is a film in Hausa language that highlights the effects of the insurgency on women and children in Sub-Saharan Africa.
