Apple introduced a new secret button feature called ‘Back Tap’ to the iPhone when it released iOS 14 in September 2020. Before you think about a ‘physical button’ you should first check the back of your phone. The feature which is called a new “button” blurs the line between hardware and software.

The Back Tap feature turns the entire back of your iPhone into a giant touch-sensitive button. it allows users to double or triple tap to trigger specific functions on your phone. You can turn on Back Tap or adjust its functions via the Accessibility menu in settings.

The feature is intended at giving users more options for interacting with their devices. With Back Tap, you can open the app switcher, notification menu, or control center; scroll through an app or webpage; trigger Siri; or take a screenshot, depending on what you choose.

The best thing is that this button is seemingly invisible and completely nonfunctional until it’s enabled via setting. This makes for a great shortcut button and could potentially save time in getting tasks done.

Apple might be the first to implement this but it’s definitely not the only phone software maker thinking in this direction. Google also experimented with a similar, albeit more limited, feature for Android 11 according to The Verge. However, it was scrapped before the OS rolled out.
