Financial documents have revealed that Fortnite generated more than $5 billion for Epic Games in its first year. The document was made public as part of Epic’s court battle with Apple over its App Store practices.

The show battle royale video game generated more than $9 billion total for Epic in 2018 and 2019. Epic had reported more than $5.5 billion in profit from the period but the document doesn’t break down Epic’s specific gains from Fortnite.

The company had made a prediction of generating almost $3.6 billion in revenue for 2020. Although Epic doesn’t usually publicly provide financial statements, CEO Tim Sweeney’s recent testimony suggests that the company actually made much more: $5.1 billion.

Fortnite is by far Epic’s more profitable business according to the documents. The company’s other games like Rocket League, acquired by Epic in 2019, made $108 million in revenue in 2018 and 2019. Epic’s engine also brought in $221 million over the same period. The company’s Game Store, launched at the end of 2018, brought in a total of $235 million for the same period.

Epic is accusing Apple’s App Store of being a monopoly. The company takes issue with the 30 percent commission, “Apple tax” Apple charges on many in-app purchases. The court trial began this week and it is expected that we will see more of the inner workings of both companies as they try to establish their cases.
