Music mogul Don Jazzy in his now-viral Black Box tell-all interview with Ebuka Obi-Uchendu shared that he’d missed out on the opportunity to sign singers Simi, Teni, Falz, and even Davido.

 Don Jazzy

During the conversation, Obi-Uchendu asked if he’d any regret and Don Jazzy said he doesn’t indulge in regrets. He however said he wishes he had signed Teni, Falz, Simi, and Davido.

Simi

In 2012, the Mavins Records boss held a Twitter competition for D’Prince’s ‘Journey of a Thousand Miles,’ featuring Wande Coal and himself. Competitors were supposed to do a cover of the song and Simi was one of the contestants.

Don Jazzy said he really loved her but couldn’t sign her.

I really loved her, I really loved her cover of the song. She didn’t win the competition, but she was high up there. In the house, I didn’t pick the winner. I had certain people join hands to pick the winner… I liked her, but you can’t sign everybody…”

Falz

Don Jazzy said Falz was in a contract with another record label in 2011 so he couldn’t join the then Mohits. He would however go on to extricate Tiwa Savage from her contract down the line.

“The working situation wasn’t right. I run a company that could handle almost any everything that he would need, but then I think he had like a management company set up already… (With Tiwa) I had to grow into (handling an artist that was already signed to a contract).”

Teni

The 38-year-old music producer said though he followed her growth, he wasn’t able to bring Teni back to Nigeria to work with him. He however says things are different now.

He says “I wasn’t in a situation to bring her from Atlanta to Nigeria and start working. Now, I can move [any artist] from wherever they are in the world… Before I knew what was happening, I think there were people that were faster and closer to her and she put out some records. I was like okay, ‘Lost that one.'”

He also said he had eyes on Davido, but joked about being daunted by the singer’s wealthy background.
