A group of Cruise robotaxis, driverless electric cars designed to carry people about, suddenly stopped working in the middle of San Francisco road, causing traffic for hours.
The incident happened on Tuesday evening, and the company behind the service is yet to explain what happened to their cars. A Reddit user shared the news and used it to explain how self-driving tech is not yet as reliable as companies make it out to be.
Cruise, a GM and Honda-backed project, had just launched towards the end of June 2022 after testing its vehicles for some months, starting in February.

While the company has managed to completely do away with the need for human drivers, they still have several limitations that make them less favourable than regular taxis. For example, they are only allowed to work in some streets between 10 at night and 6 in the morning on days with ‘favourable’ weather conditions. Also, they can’t exceed the 30mph mark.
The San Francisco incident happened at midnight and involved several of the vehicles from Cruise. Eventually, people had to come and manually clear the road, despite the company having people on the ground about 20 minutes after the cars stopped working in the middle of the street.
The company released a statement acknowledging the incident without stating a cause. “We had an issue earlier this week that caused some of our vehicles to cluster together. While it was resolved and no passengers were impacted, we apologize to anyone who was inconvenienced,” Cruise said.
