Web Browser DuckDuckGo Tests DuckAssist, An AI-Powered Answer Tool

Summary:

  • DuckDuckGo is testing an AI-powered answers tool, called DuckAssist, that generates natural language summaries from Wikipedia for search queries.
  • The feature is the first of many AI-assisted features that DuckDuckGo plans to launch, likely all reliant on OpenAI’s tech.
  • Currently, the beta version of DuckAssist can only answer questions that have straightforward answers from Wikipedia and is available only on mobile apps and browser extensions.

DuckDuckGo is testing a new answers tool that is powered by AI and provides a summary from Wikipedia relating to search queries. In a blog announcement, the web browsing company boasts that the feature can generate natural language answers.

It seems that this is just the first of many AI-assisted features that DuckDuckGo is planning to launch. DuckDuckGo added that it hopes to roll out more AI-assisted features in the coming months.

For now, you can only access the beta version of DuckAssist via the mobile apps and browser extensions. Web users can expect it in a matter of weeks after the trial period is over.

“If you enter a question that can be answered by Wikipedia into our search box, DuckAssist may appear and use AI natural language technology to anonymously generate a brief, sourced summary of what it finds in Wikipedia — right above our regular private search results,” the company said.

It is also cool that the tool works in private mode and requires no sign-up. The AI answer tool may also look at Britannica to respond to queries if Wikipedia is not enough.

What many may be asking is if the feature has anything to do with ChatGPT, and the answer is yes. DuckDuckGo revealed that it uses natural language technology from OpenAI, the company that made the viral chatbot.

Before any updates, the beta version will only be able to answer questions that have straightforward answers from Wikipedia. So, it is still far behind the new Bing, which can give answers to subjective queries as well as complete other tasks.

Also, more recent queries may not be within the DuckAssist domain because it is relying on a version of Wikipedia that is at least a few weeks old. This is another area where it is different from Bing, which can crawl the internet in real time for answers.

The feature will provide a source link to where it is answering from for users to verify answers themselves as the makers say that the answers it generates may not be accurate all the time.
