eBay To Launch Authenticity Guarantee For $100+ Sneakers In US

eBay, one of the leading ecommerce platforms in the world, is extending its authenticity guarantee to all collectivle sneakers worth over $100 in the US. It will kick off the programme by early 2021.

In a press release, eBay says that all new and pre-owned collectible sneakers sold for more that $100 will need to be ‘fully vetted and verified’. And independent team of experts in the sneakers industry will carry out the action.

This announcement follows the one the company made in September 2020 about verifying watches sold for $2,000+ in the US. eBay says it sells at least a sneakers every 1.5 seconds. Also, the platform canceled selling fees on sneakers bought for more than $100.

Commenting on the importance of authentication, Jordan Sweetnam, SVP and General Manager of eBay North America says; “Authentication has become an expectation for today’s consumers in categories of high passion and high value, and this program makes eBay the most attractive platform for enthusiasts in these categories.

Sweetnam further explained, “eBay operates the world’s most diverse sneaker marketplace – with the widest selection and best prices – and by removing any uncertainty with the buying process, our community can buy and sell with total confidence.

A seller on eBay sends a sneakers to an independent third-party authentication facility after a buyer makes payment. Then, the sneakers is subject to ‘a comprehensive, multi-point physical inspection’. They first ensure that the item corresponds to its listing title, description, and images.

Also, eBay is partnering with Sneaker Con to create a checklist of product specifications and processes to ensure accuracy and efficiency. This is not all, the new authenticity guarantee is also useful for sneakers sellers offering returns. There is a programme that will inspect the returned product and ensure that it is in good shape for sellers.

While this might seem like a time-killing process, as Jordan Sweetnam already explained; it will give both buyers and sellers confidence to keep using the platform. The company is likely looking to increase the millions of sneakers it sells every year.
