FAA Says About 78 Percent of US Planes Can Land At Airports With 5G C

The FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) of the US says that 78% of domestic planes can now land at Airports with 5G C bands. This is after some Airlines cancelled flights landing at these airports with 5G C bands over safety concerns. Telecommunication giants AT&T and Verizon recently rolled out their 5G networks at select airports across the United States. This project has reportedly been delaying for some months affecting the telecoms rollout plans.

According to the FAA, an “estimated 78 percent of the U.S. commercial fleet” have been cleared to land at airports with 5G C-band, even under low-visibility conditions. Initially, the major safety concern Airlines has was that some radio altimeters won’t properly ignore signals from the FG transmitters.

The regulatory body has recently tested and cleared planes with altimeters that won’t have interference with the 5G connectivity. It has now cleared some altimeters on Boeing planes including the Boeing 737, 747, and 777.

The current “13 cleared altimeters” covers “all”Boeing 717, 737, 747, 757, 767, 777, 787, MD-10/-11, and Airbus A300, A310, A319, A320, A330, A340, A350, and A380 models. Smaller airline company Embraer with some of its 170 and 190  regional jets are also covered.

Numerous international airlines flying to the United States are currently cancelling those trips over concerns of 5G activation at some airports. Telecommunication companies AT&T and Verizon are rolling out their C-band 5G antennas across different airports in the US. Airlines cancelling flights include the likes of Air India, Emirates and Japan Airlines etc.

The reason is due to safety interference these 5G antennas would have with some aircraft flown by Airlines. For example, Emirates one of the largest operators of the Boeing 777 says that it will be “suspending flights to the following US destinations from 19 January 2022 until further notice,” listing Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Newark, Orlando, Miami, San Francisco, Boston, Seattle and Houston.

Airline operators such as Delta have warned that the 5G technology could cause “catastrophic disruption” to their flight trips. To mitigate this challenge, airlines like South Korean Air would use other planes; asides from Boeing’s 777 and 74-8. The new development from the FAA shows it is taking safety seriously. All of the planes without compatible altimeters will not have permission to land at airports with 5G C bands.
