Facebook is set to launch its own Operating System according to trusted sources.
After achieving success with social media apps like Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger, Facebook also dipped its hands into the hardware space via Oculus and Portal devices. Now, the company has decided that its next step is to enter a world that is dominated by Apple and Google.
Not to forget that it is also building its own cryptocurrency.
Reports by The Information (via The Verge) claim that Facebook is working on developing its own operating system to power its future devices and reduce its reliance on the Android OS. At the moment, Facebook’s Oculus VR sets and Portal smart displays are run on a modified version of Android OS.
This OS would reduce or possibly eliminate the company’s reliance on Andriod and is being developed by a team led by Microsoft veteran, Mark Lucovsky.

Affirming the claims, Facebook’s head of hardware, Andrew Bosworth said.
“We really want to make sure the next generation has space for us…We don’t think we can trust the marketplace or competitors to ensure that’s the case. And so we’re gonna do it ourselves.”
Operating System, First in Facebook’s Bid For Independence
Facebook, is also developing augmented reality-powered glasses, codenamed “Orion”. The company is to launch this new product in 2023. This will coincide with Apple’s launch of its AR Glasses. The iPhone makers should also launch an AR headset by 2022 if their plans fall into place.
Facebook is also working on its own custom chips and a virtual assistant, as it confirmed earlier this year. Bloomberg, in a report in April 2019 wrote out similar plans for the company. The chip coupled with a new OS and a smarter virtual assistant (unlike M) seems like ingredients for an independent ecosystem. This would make Facebook and its devices work function independent of any company.
