Despite “Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw” having one of the best domestic debuts of the year over the weekend, it still isn’t doing that great. It was able to rake in a record $60.8 million (NGN22 billion) this past weekend. However, it happened to have the second-worst US opening of the Fast and Furious franchise.

According to Box Office Mojo, it only comes after the third movie in the franchise. The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift had the worst opening of all the Fast and Furious movies with $33 million (NGN12 billion). Hobbs and Shaw on its part cost $200 million to produce and even though it’s not doing that great in the United States, it is doing better globally.
The movie raked in $120 million (NGN43.5 billion) over the past weekend in global sales. Meanwhile, it is expected to make way more money when it starts showing in China. The Chinese market is a huge one for box office movies. It will start showing in the Asian region on August 23, 2019.
The Fast and Furious franchise has always appealed to the international market. So far the movies have grossed over $5 billion (NGN1.8 trillion) worldwide. The last two movies in the series both made over a billion dollars worldwide. Fast & Furious 7 and The Fate of the Furious were also able to make over $390 million (NGN141.5 billion) in China alone.
Idris Elba Was Villain
Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw is a ‘136-minute’ action-packed fun film. Critics say there is nothing Fast and Furious about the film. But it will be a lie if we say we didn’t feel a rush watching it. The mix of humour, action, romance and the trip to Hawaii’s Samoa will have you at the edge of your seat.
The Spin-off had Dwayne Johnson play Hobbs and Jason Statham played Shaw. Both characters had their first faceoff in Fast & Furious 7 from 2015. They were both forced to work together to defeat a common enemy. The ‘cyber-genetically enhanced’ villain called Brixton was played by Idris Elba. It was fun to watch him on the other side of the spectrum and he did a good job convincing us he was a bad guy.
A dangerous virus that could alter humanity forever needed to be taken off the grasp of the bad guys. Interestingly, a brilliant fearless beautiful female rogue MI6 agent who happens to be Shaw’s sister was caught in the mix. Hattie Shaw was played by Vanessa Kirby. Some romance developed between Hobbs and Hattie and it was not the cutest romance. The age difference was a little weird but it could be because Hobbs also plays a father to a teenager in the film.
More Spin-Offs In The Works
The movie had many post-credit scenes. Three of them in fact, so don’t get discouraged by all the people leaving the cinema hall. The best ones actually come after the entire credits. It could be a long wait but no one gets the best being impatient. Wait till the lights come on before you stand up. Promise you won’t be disappointed. You need to see the snippets of what to expect in coming films as there will definitely be a follow-up to the story.
Metacritic gave a rating of 60% while Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 67%. A 7.2/10 on IMBd is also not totally bad. We are not sure what your expectations are but the movie promises fun times and a good laugh. Kevin Hart and Ryan Reynolds made very hilarious appearances as secret agents.
